Latisys Attains U.S.-EU Safe Harbor Status And Is Certified To Display TRUSTe’s EU Safe Harbor Seal

trengthens commitment to data security, privacy and protection requirements of European Union enterprises
Englewood, CO (PRWEB) January 12, 2011
Latisys, a leading national provider of colocation, managed hosting, managed services and disaster recovery solutions, today announced its participation in the TRUSTe® U.S.-EU Safe Harbor Program and its certification to display the TRUSTe EU Safe Harbor Seal – reaffirming Latisys’ commitment to the highest levels of data privacy protection on behalf of existing and prospective clients.
The U.S.-EU Safe Harbor Framework enables U.S. companies to comply with the European Union’s Directive on Data Protection, and was designed to assure EU organizations that US companies provide “adequate” privacy protection as defined by the Safe Harbor Directive. Certification and participation in the Safe Harbor framework is entirely voluntary. TRUSTe awards its EU Safe Harbor Seal only to companies that complete TRUSTe certification, submit to ongoing site monitoring, and participate in TRUSTe’s consumer privacy dispute resolution program.
“Our unwavering focus on the security, protection and privacy of client data is why enterprise customers trust Latisys with their most sensitive information,” said Evans Mullan, Chief Operating Officer, Latisys. “We have undertaken a number of steps in recent months – including Safe Harbor self-certification and establishing a gateway to Europe via our state-of-the-art data center campus in Ashburn, Virginia – to effectively serve European companies interested in outsourcing IT infrastructure.”
Latisys compliance with the EU Safe Harbor framework is set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding the collection, use, and retention of data from the European Union. To maintain adherence to Safe Harbor principals, Latisys will leverage the services of TRUSTe, a leading Internet privacy services provider that helps businesses ensure online trust.
The safe harbor provides a number of important benefits to U.S. and EU firms, including:
  •     All 27 Member States of the European Union will be bound by the European Commission’s finding of adequacy;
  •     Companies participating in the safe harbor will be deemed adequate and data flows to those companies will continue;
  •     Member State requirements for prior approval of data transfers either will be waived or approval will be automatically granted; and
  •     Claims brought by European citizens against U.S. companies will be heard in the U.S. subject to limited exceptions.
“Given abundant consumer privacy concerns it’s no surprise that 71 percent of consumers look for trustmarks before doing business online,” said Fran Maier, President of TRUSTe. “With the TRUSTe EU Safe Harbor Seal Latisys sends a clear signal to its customers that it respects their personal information. We’ve found that 82 percent of consumers who see a TRUSTe privacy seal trust it, which translates directly into increased site engagement. That’s the privacy payoff.”
With its new Ashburn Virginia Tier III Data Center complimenting existing SAS 70 Type II compliant facilities in Chicago, Denver and Irvine, California, Latisys provides coverage across all U.S. time zones – and gateways into the Asia Pacific and Europe – delivering unmatched scalability and multi-site redundancy to enterprise customers whether they want to off-site, off-load, outsource or optimize their IT infrastructure.
